Owned by Confederate Lieutenant General William J. Hardee, this c.1791 house was the residence of his sister-in-law Anna Dummett, an ardent Confederate supporter, who raised the widowed Hardee’s four children there while he served as Commandant of Cadets at West Point and then later as a Confederate corps commander in the western theater.

In 1864, Hardee was placed in command of the Military Department of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida, where he opposed Sherman’s March to the Sea. After the war, in 1866, Anna Dummett became the first president of the St. Augustine Ladies Memorial Association and led the effort to raise funds for the erection of the city’s Confederate monument.

The house is now operated as a bed and breakfast inn.
