The Gifford Arboretum contains 450 trees maintained primarily for educational and research purposes, but also to inspire interest in, and greater appreciation for, tropical plants. The Arboretum is divided into 14 exhibit areas, primarily by plant taxonomy, but also by thematic interests. Trees are selected not only for plant diversity, but also for ethnobotanical importance and to preserve endangered species. Arboretum interpretation is provided by plant labels, exhibit signs, and a recently added QR Code tour whereby visitors can use smart-phones to learn about the trees. Additional information is available on our website.

During the academic year, monthly programs of botanical or environmental interest are presented on the 1st Thursdays of the month except in December (when our annual picnic occurs), and January.

In addition, monthly programs of Music in the Arboretum are presented on the 3rd Thursdays of the month from October to April, excepting December, in collaboration with UM’s Frost School of Music. Walking tours and other events also occur regularly. The Arboretum and all of its events are free and open to the public.

To receive email notices of Arboretum events, please contact the Director. You can also check our website for upcoming events or directions.
